Michael Owen's Newcastle Comeback Still In Sight, Says Coach

The former England great will be back to aid the Toon's relegation battle very shortly, the Magpies coach has stated, despite undergoing an operation on his damaged ankle.
Michael Owen will soon be back in action for Newcastle United, according to the man standing in for Joe Kinnear as Magpies coach.

Chris Hughton says that the England international is set for a quick return despite undergoing surgey as he continues his comeback from an ankle injury, sustained whilst playing against Manchester City last month.

The Newcastle assistant manager has told the club's official website that the ligament operation will only negligibly affect Owen's comeback, and he is still 'on schedule' as far as his return is concerned.

Owen had been undergoing intensive fitness and rehabilitation work in Portugal under the guidance of specialist John Green, with whom he has worked before.

Hughton said that Owen had undergone "very minor surgery", before explaining that he did not expect it to add to the time Owen could expect to be sidelined.

"It certainly has not increased the time he will be out," he added. "We are hopeful he will be training in a week."

Hughton also had some good news regarding manager Joe Kinnear, now recovering at home after leaving hospital following triple heart bypass surgery last week.

"He was in good form and back home," Hughton continued. "I had a good conversation with Joe yesterday and he wished us all the best."

The Toon rallied today to hold Everton 0-0 for a much-needed point after midfielder Kevin Nolan was sent off on the stroke of half-time for a two-footed tackle on the Blues' Victor Anichebe. They now stand 14th in the Premier League table, with 28 points.
